Alley Art

Streetscapes, Lloydminster’s Downtown Business District, has started a new program called Alley Art. The goal is to create tons of murals in the back alleys downtown. Outlined below are a couple different options provided for property owners. Streetscapes will be contributing 25% and are in search of another partner willing to contribute 25%.  The plan is:

  • Step 1: Find property owners
  • Step 2: Find partners
  • Step 3: Find an artist with skills to paint as well as having a skill set to oversee the community joining in the painting
  • Step 4: Work with artist to determine project type.  Paint by numbers or whichever type is most recommended.
  • Step 5: Marketing and rallying people to come out and paint.  Have a kick off day held as an event with a bbq, beverages, and painting.

Options available to property owners:

Option 1: Commission an artist to paint a mural.

  • Streetscapes will offer grants. (Projects $1000 - $5000, 25% grant)  (Projects $5001 - $10,000, 15% grant)
  • Cost of murals can vary significantly by size of wall and detail of the painting.

Option 2: Community Project.

  • Streetscapes will commission an artist to head the project and schools, the Youth Centre, and people in the community can come and paint.
  • Example: An artist designs a paint by numbers and does the outline.  People from the community can come and paint some spots, then the artist does the finishing touches.
  • Example: Get schools involved.  An artist is commissioned to head the project and Streetscapes will work with some of the schools to have students work on the project as well.

Option 3: Open Graffiti Wall

  • Invite artists to come and paint graffiti on the wall
  • Several other cities have done this, including Edmonton: http://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/city-hopes-legal-graffiti-walls-will-deter-vandals-1.1341116
  • The costs for you would be close to nothing besides your wall.
  • Streetscapes could have a kick off day for the open graffiti wall, find some paint donations, invite local professional artists, and get the ball rolling on it.  Inviting some professional artists would get some structured art on the wall and then the recreational artists would paint around (typically graffiti artists will not tag over other people art).
