Valdy

The Root: Community Emporium
Phone: 306-825-5885

Valdy, born Valdemar Horsdal in Ottawa, Canada has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop and folk music for over 34 years. A man with a thousand friends, from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island to Texas to New Zealand, he’s a singer, guitarist and songwriter who catches the small but telling moments that make up life.

Remembered for Play Me a Rock and Roll Song, his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself, a relaxed and amiable story-teller, facing a rambunctious audience at the Aldergrove Rock Festival circa 1968, Valdy has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), a total of seven Juno nominations and four Gold albums to his credit.

Valdy’s recent CDs include “Contenders”, a collaboration with friend and fellow singer/songwriter, Gary Fjellgaard, with whom he has an absolute blast touring, and a solo release, “Viva Valdy: Live at Last”, a two-CD package, one live, one studio, with a total of 25 tunes, and a lyric booklet.

One of Canada’s most influential songwriters, Valdy’s composition A Good Song was recorded under the title Just a Man by the venerable Quincy Jones ( he sang lead on the recording!). Play Me a Rock and Roll Song has been recorded by a few artists, including John Kay of Steppenwolf.

Along the way, Valdy has taken his music to a dozen different countries, from Denmark to Australia and been an often-invited performer at the prestigious Kerrville Festival in Texas. His recent television appearances include Canada AM and Open Mike with Mike Bullard. Valdy has also been a panelist on Front Page Challenge, and played a lead role in an episode of The Beachcombers original series.

Today, he is based on Salt Spring Island, where he lives with his wife Kathleen, three dogs and a large cat. All three children are grown, flown and doing famously living in or near Vancouver, or Colorado.

“If you need me, I’ll be in Wisconsin,” sings Sean Burns, but he's just as likely to be found in Calgary or Ottawa, Tofino or Regina.Touring relentlessly from one end of Canada to the other, Winnipeg-based singer/songwriter Sean Burns taps into the bittersweet spirit of the road and then spins it his way with a blend of electric and acoustic guitars and a soulful harmonica.

Sean's music will resonate with fans of Canadiana, Americana, Folk, Country and Blues alike. The songs, which hint at such influences as Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash, capture the grittiness of the road in the stark, down-to-earth style of an authentic storyteller.

The Steadies take the explosively popular Top 40 sound and mix it with rocksteady and reggae influences, creating what they’ve dubbed, “island rock.” No matter your mood, The Steadies pick you up and carry you to the beach in your mind, the club in your dreams, the place you go to clear your head and dance. It’s a scene where rumbling fault lines rip open the dance floor, and the only thing that keeps you from falling over is the gravitational pull of the steady beat. The Steadies aren’t invited to the party—they are the party.

A special tribute to Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger

The 1970s. A time for upheaval. A time for awareness. A time for dreams.

Return to the heady days of flowing scarves, tight pants and feathered hair with the First Lady of Rock, Stevie Nicks, in this unique tribute concert experience that brings to vivid life the music legend in all her billowing-sleeved, bohemian glory. Uncannily emulating Nicks’ throaty purr and lipsticked panache, artist Julie C. Myers delivers era-defining ballads and bluesy rock as only Stevie would.
In a never-before-seen concert experience, 70’s bad boys Mick Jagger (Johnny Moroko) and Rod Stewart (Martin D. Andrew) cross the pond to join Nicks in a fantasy come true: a return to the glory days of youth and possibility. In this altered state of reality, where Maggie May segues into Leather and Lace, where (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction thunders on the heels of Rhiannon, where legends duet on their most iconic songs – Dreams: A Classic Rock Fantasy delivers a musical performance like no other, and makes fans’ dreams come true.
A show within a dream, a Steampunk-esque illusion of suspended reality, the event creates an atmosphere in which the obligations of everyday life are deferred while fantasy takes hold and the audience becomes one with the dream.

Dublin roots band I Draw Slow have been drumming up enthusiastic reviews in Ireland since the release of their top 10 selling second album, Redhills.

I Draw Slow is a five-piece outfit comprising vocals, guitar, fiddle, banjo and double bass. Holden siblings Dave (guitar) and Louise (vocals) have been writing together for two decades. The pair teamed up with Violinist Adrian Hart, Claw hammer banjo player Colin Derham, Double bassist Konrad Liddy to form I Draw Slow.

The Sound: Alt-country, folk, roots, old-time, Americana The five have created a new sound, rooted in the old time style of the Appalachian Mountains, drawing on Irish traditional music and modern Americana. However, this is a whole new songbook of stories and melodies. These are dark tales of debauchery and trouble swinging from the kind of well-crafted melodies that survive.

Growing up together in Edmonton, AB, Trevor Mann (lead vocals and guitar), Murray Wood (bass) and Shea Connor (drums and vocals), have been friends for as long as they can remember. Each member began learning their respective instruments around the age of 13 and soon after formed a band and began practicing together. Initially, the band played R&B and rock and roll covers for hall shows and weddings. They became a kind of session band, backing up local artists of varying genres and accumulated the valuable performance experience that made them stand out as a mature young group. After several years of this and having performed at nearly every venue in Edmonton, the trio created Scenic Route to Alaska in the summer of 2010.

With new direction and inspiration, Scenic Route to Alaska quickly developed their indie-folk rock sound as the trio shaped Mann’s new material into a unified concept. The band worked toward writing and recording their first EP in the Fall of 2010. Mann and Connor traveled to Montreal to meet with Wood who was attending McGill University for jazz double bass performance. They booked three overnight recording sessions with masters students at McGill, which resulted in three of the six songs off their first EP. The remaining three songs were recorded at Norwood Studios with James Murdoch and Chris Wynters (Captain Tractor) back in Edmonton when Wood came home for the summer. In 2011, the band toured throughout Alberta and British Columbia and released their debut self-titled EP before playing the Canmore and Edmonton Folk Music Festivals.

With Wood completing his degree in Montreal, Mann and Connor continued to play as a duo, remaining increasingly active. They toured to Toronto for Canadian Music Week, returned to McGill to record their first full length album (All These Years), became Edmonton’s Sonic 102.9 Band of the Month for February, in 2012. After releasing their first full-length album, All These Years in June of 2012, they began playing festivals and showcases, touring from Vancouver to Halifax to extensively promote the release. The Album was nominated for three Edmonton Music Awards. Shortly after, they began the pre-production for their next album in August of 2013.

Their sophomore album Warrington, recorded by Brad Smith and produced by Jay Sparrow in Edmonton, builds on their distinctive “prairie-indie” sound, and captures the positive energy that the trio brings to their live performance. It’s also the first album recorded after being reunited in their hometown. Inspired by lead singer Trevor Mann’s English war bride grandmother, Dorothy, this deceptively cheery indie-folk album puts an optimistic spin on dealing with love and loss. Since the release, they have been nominated for Pop Recording of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, made top 12 for the Alberta Peak Performance Project and have been on radio charts throughout North America. Furthermore, the band received the Cruz FM Emerging Artist award at the 2014 Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

AgriCulture is an artistic exploration into the history of First Nations agricultural practices in North America. AgriCulture offers a unique amalgamation of visual art, North American history and educational opportunities for viewers. This body of work also marks the first traveling curated exhibit originating from the First Nations University of Canada’s Permanent Collection.

Corn is one of the most important food staples in the world, together with Beans and Squash, “The Three Sisters” supply almost half the world’s total food supply. Corn, itself, was improved upon and evolved over time due to the efforts of First Nations farmers who domesticated the plant hundreds of years ago. Interestingly, many of today’s medicines, foods and farming techniques were developed by the original inhabitants of North America, during a time when European agricultural practices, for example, were in their infancy. The importance of these developments continues to be felt today and is explored as rich subject matter by artists such as Allen Sapp, Daphne Odjig and Gerald McMaster to name a few.

Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world famous, Tito Morelli, Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as Otello. The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli's Otello costume and fool the audience into thinking he's Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. Pop-Up Market

The pop-up retail project is closer to becoming a reality. Retail space is available downtown that would allow 12 vendors to set up shop and showcase their product on a short-term basis (one week, one month, six months or one year). The space still needs minor renovations and a potential opening in 6 months may be possible.

Lloydminster's pilot pop-up retail project is organized in partnership with Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, Community Futures Lloydminster & Region, Lloydminster Economic Development and Destination Downtown Streetscapes.

If you are an artisan interested in short-term pop-up retail space, take the survey: here

Four brothers, one destiny. (Okay that might've been a little over-the-top).

Liam, Jeremy, Luke, and Joe have been making music most of their lives in one way or another. With many musical stylings and influences, bluegrass, folk, Celtic, reggae, blues and rock 'n roll, it's difficult to put them into one musical genre. They've been called the Western band with the Eastern sound, and their many original tunes reflect this diversity.

Kate Weekes – Singer-Songwriter, Guitar, Vocals

Mar 24, 2015
Phone: 306-825-5885

Kate Weekes stood on the Trans-Canada Highway eleven years ago; she stuck out her thumb and left Ontario for an adventure in the Yukon. Now, deeply embedded in the Yukon music community, Kate lives in a little orange cabin outside of Whitehorse and spends the Yukon winters working with 17 sled dogs. On her travels throughout Canada Kate has been moved to capture the stories of characters she meets along her way and ponder a sense of place within the varying lifestyles of our country. Her songs paint pictures of mushing through the mountains and paddling in the remote corners of the Yukon.
Kate released her debut self-titled album in 2007 and has since performed throughout Canada, Japan & China. Her eclectic interests in music have led to collaborative projects including an album of northern fiddle tunes with Home Sweet Home in 2011 and a folk/swing album “Beneath the Yukon Moon” with Grant Simpson the same year. The past year has seen Kate perform in places stretching from Nanjing China to McDonald’s Corners in Ontario to Haines Junction in the Yukon. “Frost on Black Fur” is Kate’s second solo album. Released in October 2014, the original songs weave tales of dog mushing in Yukon’s winter, paddling on remote rivers in the Peel Watershed and send the listeners as far away as Ireland and China. Kate toured the album in Ontario in the fall of 2014 and will be performing across Canada in the winter and spring of 2015.

Chad Brownlee

A testament to his drive and talent, Chad Brownlee is an extraordinary example of what one person can achieve. Although he may focus on living in the moment and absorbing every treasured second with his fans while performing on stage, Brownlee has already lived a life many would argue could fill multiple lifetimes. An award-winning singer, songwriter, philanthropist and former NHL draft pick, country music artist Brownlee is by definition a renaissance man, who lives by the credence that “opportunity lies along the path created by the choices you make.”

In recent years his singles have rapidly climbed the country music charts, with multiple singles cracking Top 10, including “Listen”, “Smoke In The Rain” and “Crash”.

Over the last few years Brownlee has received critical acclaim and numerous accolades including a highly coveted JUNO nomination for Country Album of the Year, and consecutive Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA®) Award™ Male Artist of the Year nominations (2012 & 2013).

Jess Moskaluke

Jess Moskaluke is dazzling the country music world. Her rapidly growing fan base is evident, with a collective online following in the millions, receiving her official Silver Play Button YouTube award for breaking 100,000 subscribers. A notable performer on the 2014 CCMA® Awards Show live broadcast, Jess dominates the stage with her powerful vocals, country-pop style and infectious smile. Her single "Cheap Wine and Cigarettes" quickly became the highest charting song on the iTunes top 200 singles chart for any Canadian artist. With this second single off of her new 10‐track album Light Up The Night, she also achieved GOLD record status in August 2014; becoming the first Canadian female solo country artist to surpass 40,000+ downloads for a song since Shania Twain. Moskaluke just earned two Juno nominations for Country Album and Breakthrough Artist.

Bobby Wills

An acclaimed musician with a reputation for writing from the heart, Bobby Wills is an award‐winning country artist balancing a dual personality as he musically shifts gears, tapping into a heavier country sound with the release of his new album. Years in the making, his third album Crazy Enough, is an intense mixture of rock‐inspired country tracks featuring a musical attack of the senses with percussion and a bevy of string instruments, balanced with his signature melodic harmonies and intimate lyrical story‐telling. As he spent countless hours in studio completing his new album, Alberta native Wills has enjoyed an extraordinary year winning the 2013 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA®) awards™ Rising Star title, as well as consecutively taking home the Alberta Country Music Association (ACMA) Male Artist of the Year award (2012/2013).

Tereza Tomek hosts Open Mic

The Root: Community Emporium
Mar 31, 2015
Phone: 306-825-5885

Tereza Tomek’s lyrically driven songs tell the tales of characters you never expected to meet but are glad you did, such as a West Coast Trail lighthouse keeper at the turn of the century, a girl whose receives a life-saving organ transplant because of a strangers tragedy, and a tree with a bad case of wanderlust. They are sprinkled with vivid imagery and themes of nature, isolation, grief, restlessness, exploration, defiance, and love. Though sometimes the story is told through the eyes of others, her songs are deeply personal and rooted in the empathy that binds us all.  Audiences can expect an interactive presentation of unique songwriting delivered with richly toned vocals, catchy guitar riffs, endearing stage presence, and a good dose of humour.
