Ann Vriend’s new album, entitled “For The People In The Mean Time” tells tough tales of the struggle of inner city life against the backdrop of explosive indie soul beats and harmonies. Despite the subject matter “backed with heavy grooves For The People In The Mean Time is upbeat without forcing needless optimism” writes the Calgary Sun, adding “Vriend’s voice is unmistakable, catching and powerful.” Production-wise, “with all its dubs, loops, samples, creaks, quirks and squeaks [For The People In the Mean Time] creates a Bohemian approximation of a Motown record that would do Berry Gordy Jr. proud…. Overall, ‘For the People in the Mean Time’ is a stunning and (despite all the comparisons) original achievement” writes City Gigs, Edmonton.

Colin Mochrie is an alumnus of Toronto's famous Second City comedy troupe and is widely considered to be one of the leading improvisers in the world. In 2013, Colin Mochrie was named Canadian Comedy Person of the Year at the Canadian Comedy Awards.

After nine years as a regular on the British improvisation series Whose Line is it Anyway?, he became a regular on the American version hosted by Drew Carey, which ran for six years on ABC and three years on ABC Family. In 2011, the entire cast was reunited in Vegas for Drew Carey's Improv‐aganza, a new series which aired for one season on GSN. A new hit version of Whose Line is it Anyway?, featuring Colin, Wayne, Ryan, and new host Aisha Tyler, is currently airing on the CW Network. Launched in July of 2013 with 12 episodes, it has subsequently been renewed for a second season with an order of 24 more shows to air in 2014.

Colin appears regularly in film and television and was notably a cast member of CBC's classic news spoof This Hour Has 22 Minutes for two seasons. With his wife, Debra McGrath, he produced, wrote and starred in the CBC show Getting Along Famously.

Her work of late has included, Little Mosque on the Prairie where she plays the Mayor, Single White Spenny, the voice of Winners, The Ron James Show. Deb was also nominated for an Actra Award for the movie Expecting and has been inducted into the Scarborough Walk of Fame, a proud moment for this former Scarborough girl.

Together they have also played a husband and wife in Love Letters and Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town for CBC, and Living in My Car. Deb has just co-created a pilot called Filling the Gaps with Colin and her writing partner Barbara Radecki. With Barb she created a labour of love -- their blog http://themiddle-ages.blogspot.com. The Huron Carole – A Musical – is just that - an enchanting musical re-enactment of the very first Huron Carole concert that took place in 1987. Alongside concert series founder Tom Jackson, guest artists in both the musical (Act 1) and special concert (Act 2) include Don Amero, Shannon Gaye, Beverley Mahood and One More Girl.

Jackson’s philanthropic national projects now celebrate 27 years of fundraising history with over $200 million in cash/in-kind services for food banks, family agencies and disaster relief.

Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life are the presenting sponsors of The Huron Carole – A Musical.  Local food banks are the beneficiaries from ticket sales and all funds remain at the local level. Tour Dates/Locations/Links at huroncarole.ca

Jackson shares, “The Huron Carole – A Musical will be an unwrapping of the gift I received while living in a crawlspace in 1987. I carry it in my heart. It continues to motivate me to share the philosophy of ‘the gift is in the giving’. The gift is life-changing, and in my case, life-saving.”

The FHB are known for having a sound that, although not bound to traditional conservatism, doesn’t sound like a bluegrass band trying to make new country or pop hits. They are noted for having the ability to slide between being a bluegrass band or an old-time band with remarkable ease and authority. Even a casual listener can tell that the FHB owe as much to the country music that happened pre-1945 as to the golden age of bluegrass.

Well.... suppose Robert turns up not realizing quite why he has been invited. Suppose Robert and Jacqueline are secret lovers, and consequently determined that Jacqueline will NOT leave for the weekend. Suppose the cook has to pretend to be the mistress and the mistress is unable to cook. Suppose everyone's alibi gets confused with everyone else's. Heavy Metal

Exhibit from OSAC
Nov 1 - 22
Lloydminster Cultural & Science Centre

Heavy Metal is a group exhibition featuring the works of three Prairie artists: B.A, Conly, Ken Dalgarno, and Mark Vitaris. All three artists have an element of metal in their work, either through imagery or use of the material.

Heavy Metal - Boundary Rd Alberta 150 x 123.jpg
The majority of this exhibition is comprised of photography; however three sculptural pieces of various sizes will be included as well as an audio component.

B.A. Conly’s metal sculptures are inspired by the Grasslands National Park as well as her personal connection to the Prairie environment. Conly’s work evokes the movement and tone of the prairies as well as the objects and
sounds found in this setting.

Ken Dalgarno and Mark Vitaris are both photographers. Dalgarno has photographed the Crooked Trees of Alticane. This grove of genetically mutated trees near Hafford, Saskatchewan proves to be a captivating subject for Dalgarno who prints his photographs on aluminum. This technique adds an elemental quality to the overall tone of the photographs.

Mark Vitaris has photographed vehicles that were abandoned in the Prairie. Their decaying and rusted metal bodies provide a unique compositional tool as well as a study in colour and texture.

Together, these works create an evocative exhibition; one that encapsulates the unique quality of the prairie landscape. It is an accessible and professional exhibition that will truly engage the audience.

All your broken Tambourines
And shattered dreams
And quiet screams
We’ll just leave them with the band
Take my hand
We’ll just dance

The heart of rock and roll is alive and well with Fred Eaglesmith’s 20th album, Tambourine. Fusing together all of Fred’s past influences, the result is pure rock ‘n ‘roll reminiscent of 1966.

Eaglesmith is a veteran of the music industry and at the same time is about as far away from actually participating in today’s music industry as one could be. Never operating within anyone’s boundaries, he continues to set the standard for independent artists everywhere. While blazing his own often colourful path he has avoided most of the traps and pitfalls of his peers, his career reads like a manual on how to succeed in music today without trying to fit into the traditional business models.

It’s been an eventful past four years for Saskatoon’s Gunner & Smith. Starting in 2010 as a solo project by folk artist Geoff Smith, the band evolved into a multi-member indie country rock ensemble that traverses the rocky line between post-prairies balladeering and grit-covered rockers for those given to heavy highway drives and long, expansive thoughts. Initially emerging from Smith’s one-man vision, Gunner & Smith released their first EP, Letter of Marque, in 2011. Featuring the lithe, lonely swaying sounds of Saskatchewan folk, country and rock, Smith quickly followed up his sparse debut release with his second EP entitled Compromise is a Loaded Gun.

The Canadian Reggae Infiltration has begun…

When Al Peterson & Caleb “BraveHart” Hart decided on a whim to climb onto the stage together in January 2013 they could not have predicted what the years ahead held. After only 3 improvised songs, they were surrounded by a crowd of people asking where their music could be found, and so a band (now including Adam Paananen and Derek Wilder) was formed!

Alexandria Maillot

It is easy to assume, at the age of twenty-one, that endeavours are a mere surface scratch to the entirety of one’s corporeality lifespan. Toes have been dipped in the waters of trial and triumph, yet a quarter of a life hardly merits a badge of prolific feat. It is easy to assume, at the age of twenty-one, that one does not yet know who they are. It is easy to assume.

Kirsten Ludwig

From a young age, Kirsten Ludwig has been painting blank pages with words of reflection and heartache – as well as colouring the still air of her home, in Calgary, AB, with other-worldly melodies. At the age of 21, Kirsten continues to surprise listeners with her thought-provoking and poetically driven lyrics that seem to be written by the fingertips of a soul that has been around for much longer. With a mixture of mature lyrics, hauntingly crisp vocals, and catchy punchlines, Kirsten defies the boundaries of pop with a musical perception that transcends the expected and conventional. Her sound leaves you wandering through a dark forest with only the moonlight to guide you.

Jeff has been singing since he was five years old. In a similar situation to Elvis, Jeff was encouraged strongly by his Mum. Both Jeff and Elvis sang in church with their mothers and entered talent contests at an early age!

The first time Jeff performed his tribute to Elvis was for a figure skating fund raiser for his daughters. That was in 1987 and Jeff did a few shows and in 2000 he was challenged to compete in the largest competition in North America and in 2003 was fortunate enough to become Grand Champion in the Non-Professional division.

For several years between 2000 and 2007 Jeff competed in Memphis TN during Elvis week in August. Each year Jeff was fortunate to finish as a finalist.

In 2007 Jeff competed in the Penticton Pacific North West Elvis festival and won the Professional championship. As a prize for this victory Jeff was honoured as one of the first 24 top professional Tribute Artists in the world to be invited to the inaugural Ultimate Elvis competition. This is the first Elvis Tribute artist competition that was fully supported and sanctioned by Graceland and Elvis Presley Enterprises, EPE. To be named as one of the top 24 artists in the world and to compete in such a prestigious event was truly an honour!

Please sit back relax and enjoy the ride down memory lane. Close your eyes and imagine the Essence of Elvis performing especially for you!

Donations for the Lloydminster Food Bank will be accepted the evening of the event.

Hats Off Lloydminster

September 18, 2014
The Canadian Brewhouse
Doors Open: 6 pm
Auction: 8 pm

Tickets: $20 - Includes Steak Dinner
alt

Auctioneer: Kurt Price

The Canadian Brewhouse is the backdrop to a fundraising event for Vic Juba Community Theatre that features the auctioning of one NHL team hat for each NHL team.

The holder of the hat of the Stanley Cup winning team receives 20% of the proceeds. The holders of the hats of each regular season Conference Winner receives 5% of the proceeds (each). The holder of the hat of the official last place team in the season receives 10% of the proceeds.

Get your team together to bid on the hat of your choice! Buy your tickets and then reserve a table for your group. To reserve a table, phone The Canadian Brewhouse: 780-871-0730.

The higher the bid, the more you ultimately win! For example, their total goal with this fundraiser is $21,000. After they divide up the proceeds at the end of Stanley Cup play-offs, that goal will allow this non-profit organization to potentially raise $12,600. Eastern Division Champ would then potentially win $1,050. Western Division Champ would potentially win $1,050. Last place would potentially win $2,100. The Stanley Cup Winner would potentially win $4,200. However, if they raise more, you win more!!

There will also be a silent auction which includes 4 tickets and flight to the October 19 Saskatchewan Roughriders vs Edmonton Eskimoes Game (donated by Courtesy Air).
