Joe Nolan hosts Open Mic
Joe Nolan traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to record his third album “Goodbye Cinderella”. The album was produced by award-winning producer Colin Linden and featured some of Nashville’s most storied players including Spooner Oldham (Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin and Neil Young) on keyboards, Charlie McCoy (Bob Dylan, Elvis, Simon & Garfunkel) on harmonica, Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, John Mellencamp) on acoustic bass, Chris Donahue (Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant) on electric bass, Bryan Owings (Emmylou Harris, Tony Joe White, Delbert McClinton) on drums, along with producer Linden (Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams) on electric guitars and vocals. The record was brilliantly recorded by John Whynot (Blue Rodeo, Loreena McKennitt) who also contributed keyboards on a few songs. The recording features 10 new Joe Nolan compositions and shows a quantum leap in maturity and confidence. Joe’s beautiful combination of sweet, sad lyrics and haunting vocals come from a deep well that shows a young man’s heart and an old man’s soul. Protest songs, love songs, songs with questions and songs with answers created a collection that has the listener wanting more. His live performances are mesmerizing and the audience connects to Joe’s soft, honest and heart-felt delivery. Praise for “Goodbye Cinderella” came from many directions. The reviews are stellar, the recording was quickly picked up for distribution in Europe with a commitment for Joe to embark on his first European tour in the spring of 2012, and more recently, Joe was nominated in the Best New/Emerging Artist category at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Joe has been performing non-stop over the past few years building an ever growing fan base. He has been sharing stages with established artists that include Todd Snider, Colin Linden, Sam Baker, Gurf Morlix, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women, Mathew Barber, Oh Susanna and the legendary Peter Asher.
Craig Cardiff
For the past two and a half years, Craig Cardiff has been passing around a Book of Truths during his shows and asking his fans to share something truthful in it — a story, a confession, a hope, a secret. The book gives fans a chance to write down something they might be too afraid to say out loud, and it gives Cardiff an opportunity to connect with the people who come to his shows.
Those entries aren’t always easy to read. The stories can be heartbreaking, and they can leave Cardiff wanting to do something, to find the person who wrote in his book and tell them to hold on for tomorrow, that things will be OK.
Cardiff’s new album, Love Is Louder (Than All This Noise) Part 1 & 2, has turned into a response to those stories. This double album, released November 19, 2013, offers 21 tracks that are connected by an underlying sense that there are better days to come.
Riley Smith opens for Blue Moon Marquee
Jazz clubs and crowded bar rooms. Low light and Blue smoke. Blue Moon Marquee has a sound largely influenced by old delta blues, swing, jazz and ragtime. Led by Alexander Wesley Cardinal, a Metis of Cree Heritage who was born in a small oil town – Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Cardinal was introduced to blues and jazz first hand from professional live musicians in jazz venues and crowded bar rooms in Montreal and New York City, where he has spent a good deal of time. His “Jass Band” is Jasmine Colette, a multi-faceted performer/ bassist & singer originally from the Alberta Badlands. She has toured and played all over North America for the last six years, sharing the stage with such artists as Paul Pigat, Bill Bourne, Andrew Loog Oldham, Tanya Tagaq, David Gogo, Simon Kendall, Madagascar Slim & Wyckam Porteous.
Together they share a kindred appreciation of antiquated music, deeply influenced by artists such as Lonnie Johnson, Eddie Lang, Blind Willie Mctell,Leroy Carr, Skip James. Memphis Minnie and Django Reinhardt. A.W.’s original compositions are rooted in this early style, with a modernistic approach of lyric & presentation. Cardinal and Colette predominately play as a duo, although have a distictive sound, like a four piece blues swing band. A.W plays rhythm and lead guitar, harmonica & vocals, whereas Jasmine sings, plays Upright Bass, and drums with her feet. Their smoldering chemistry & classic sound makes for an enthralling listen & captivating performance.
The duo frequently pick up & collaborate with various players along the way, performing with as many as four guests any given night. Blue Moon Marquee plays and writes songs that have the ability to connect to any surrounding and are enjoyed from young to old. The notes picked from their instruments dare you to move with the air particles they’ve manipulated, & the songs written and performed by the band beckon you to come closer, to tilt your head and listen to the seductive mysteries.
Alex Shenton
Alex Shenton is the frontman and songwriter for the Saskatoon based
rock band Bastard Poetry. Born and raised in rural Pincher Creek
(Alberta), Alex was always a prolific poet who found himself frequently
lost in music. Working as a concrete finisher to pay bills, he spent
several years chiselling poetry into acoustic songs, as he also cut his
teeth in metal, rock, and blues as a bassist. When he finally had the
confidence he sought out a group to lead, using his poetry as a
foundation for a full band to build upon.

The Root: Community Emporium

Robin learned his first chords in the back of a Mr. Entertainment in north Edmonton sometime in the late 1980s. His experience as a professional archaeologist has provided him with many opportunities to view the underbelly of human history – good source material for roots rock and roll songs. Robin has released two records: 2007’s Wasp Nest Blues and 2011′s The Impossible Address. The roots and roll juggernaut that is Robin Woywitka and the Super 92 were formed when Robin returned to Edmonton from recording The Impossible Address record in Como, Mississippi. Cousins Craig Kowalchuk (guitar, lap steel, harmonica) and Greg Kolodychuk (bass) bring an inimitable feel that is bred in the bone. Along with drummer Alex Jumpsen’s sturdy and inventive beats, the Super 92 is the perfect medium for Woywitka’s rock and roll compositions. The band loves its audience, and believes that they have to earn your love and attention with every song. They are based out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
