Jazz on the Border
Just before Christmas when Murray McDonnell and Ross Ulmer were rehearsing for Mardi Gras their break conversation quickly centered on how little Jazz is heard in Lloydminster. There wasn’t a performance venue where local artists, and especially local budding artists could try their skills in performance. As Murray pointed out - "wouldn't it be great if the local teachers could assign one of their students some selections to learn, and have a place where they can use that knowledge, and even get graded on their public performance!" At the same time they both Murray and Ross miss the big City amenity of going to a restaurant, having a nice meal with friends. perhaps a glass of wine and enjoy music along with the company and the meal.
Amanda Amundrud, owner of the Root Community Emporium restaurant downtown is a strong supporter of the arts, and with the Root's cooperation jazz will be featured on one Wednesday each month at the Root. This pilot project will begin March 26th. The first music set will begin at 6:30 and feature the 'house band' of Murray, Ross and invited friends. The co-leaders know the importance of a pleasant sounding mix of music while enjoying supper and diners can expect a wonderful hour of 'smooth' jazz selections to tickle the ear as the Root pleases their palate.
More excitement will happen at 8 PM with the open mic set. Using the house rhythm section local artists are encourage to come out and display their talents. Great performances take practice, and two weeks before each open mic session, the tunes will be picked and available by emailing rulmer@bordercity.com. Open Mic participants are asked to get the music, and let Ross know they are coming. The combination of preparation, and great playing will make that hour of listening a fun part of anyone's Wednesday evening. The Root keeping to its traditions is preparing a selection of special finger foods that will be available for the casual listener who wants something a little lighter than a main meal.
On Wednesday March 26, support live music – we’ll see you at the Root.
