From beloved author Gail Bowen comes the 15th installment in a national bestselling series, A Joanne Kilbourn Mystery.
Joanne's husband Zack is the leading progressive candidate in a neck-and-neck race, with the existing mayor, for Regina's top job. The tough campaigning is well underway when a disturbing threat disrupts the celebration for the opening of the Racette-Hunter Centre -- a project Zack has been spearheading, intended to benefit the impoverished community of North Central Regina. Joanne soon realizes that sinister interests are working behind the scenes of the election, and another savage act makes clear that someone will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo.
The Shreve campaign perseveres, but when Zack's opponents share some shocking information about the past, the revelation sends Joanne reeling. As tensions around the election build, Joanne tries to hold herself together, keep her family intact, and get to the bottom of why a series of violent incidents, seemingly related to the mayoral race, all lead back to a mysterious property in North Central, 12 Rose Street.
REVIEWS

FRIENDS REMEMBERED TOUR – Background
By Ross Ulmer
I was invited to play second trombone with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra about three years ago – and boy was it FUN. The lead trombone player was fantastic as was the lead Trumpet and it felt GREAT to play in a really good Jazz Ensemble. The last time I can remember being in a band that good was at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts where I taught at Jazz camp – and had the pleasure of playing a big band concert every night with some of the best musicians, and educators in North America. It was thrilling and powerful every single night. Last year I had the good fortune to be invited to play a feature number with the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra. When I introduced the tune to the audience I dedicated it to my friend Frank who had arranged it (who has passed away) and for another friend (Ashley) who had played it (who also passed away). It was SO much fun remembering their music (he was an incredible arranger) and within a week of playing that concert the idea was born.
In the seventies as I pursued a musical career I had the good fortune to study with some incredible musicians, from Frank Rosolino through Rich Matteson (a prime influence for my attending North Texas State University) and Phil Wilson. In my formative years I had incredible guidance from my first band leader Norm Lehman and was given a free hand at the University of Saskatchewan to pursue interests in Dance Band and Jazz Ensemble even though formal instruction was not available.
My vision of this concert tour is twofold, one to create the best large Jazz Ensemble possible so I can get the thrill of playing that comes only with playing with the very best players, and players who love the music enough to practice their parts! And the second is to recreate the excitement for the audience that I felt when I first fell in love with Big Band Jazz. That needs some background to understand. I tell you with some embarrassment that the only trombone record I had until about the age of 20 was a couple of Tommy Dorsey albums of my dad’s. So in 1972 (I think!) – the Saskatchewn Summer School of the Arts brought in the National Stage Band Camps (and continued until 1987). I hadn’t heard of the artists (Phil Wilson, a young Lyle Mays & Lou Marini, John LaPorta, Wes Hensel, Rich Matteson, Ashley Alexander and the list goes on!) but a group of us went down to ‘check it out’. Each night the staff put on a concert – and this was the first live (or on record!) Jazz Ensemble I had ever heard – well from the first note of that first concert to the last – my leg wouldn’t quit moving in time to the music (not my foot – my whole leg!) – and the smile didn’t leave my face as I was literally thrilled with the music, the soloists – it was tremendous. The mission of this concert tour to give students and adults – a bit of that thrill.
My preference in jazz, classical or pop is for music with great melodies and as a result I’ve chose selections that I believe everyone will find listenable and enjoyable no matter what their background. I’ve also chosen every selection with either a friend or a mentor I have played or studied with. For example, the very first selection of the night will be Wood Chopper’s Ball – a tune that we played under Norm Lehman’s direction (though we have chosen the Woody Herman arrangement from that time period) in the NBCK show band. I’m hunting down an unpublished version of Alfie to feature one of our trumpet players, and Frank Mantooth (the arranger and friend who has passed away) wrote a beautiful arrangement for a piano ballad on ‘Young and Foolish’. This is my way of telling anyone considering coming to this concert – that not only will the quality of the musicians be fantastic – I absolutely know you will enjoy the actual selections – this is a concert you’ll remember with joy!
Finally I end with two short stories that convinced me this concert tour was meant to be. My mentor (and occasional teacher) Phil Wilson had written a rollicking fun (and humorous) tune called Colonel Corn (because of all the Corney licks in it – really!) that was played often when I was teaching at the summer jazz camp in the late seventies and eighties. This is no longer available in print. Phil still teaches at Berklee in Boston so I went out on a limb and sent him an email asking if he had a copy and if I could buy it from him. Within two weeks he had sent me a copy, free of charge! One of my favorite parts of playing with the RCMP Band for two years was the trombone section – one of the arrangers from the band wrote a number of really fantastic trombone section features. I got a hold of him and asked him if he could rework an arrangement of ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ for Jazz Ensemble – and the answer was YES at a price so ridiculously low for the arrangement that I had to increase the fee (at some point – it felt like theft!). This concert is meant to be!

The response to Sean Hogan’s 1996 debut album was extraordinary. His uniquely authentic blend of “alt-country” and “modern rustic pop” immediately caught the attention of country radio and music fans across Canada, leading to his first Canadian Country Music Association award (Independent Male Artist of the Year, 1997). Sean’s next two albums, Hijacked and Late Last Night, were each named Best Country Album at the West Coast Music Awards. He followed up these accolades with the CCMA’s Roots Artist of the Year award in 2003. His next album, Catalina Sunrise, won three more music industry awards and was named the second best album of 2005 by the Country Music News.
Hit single after hit single (Slow Turning, Sure Fire Love, Dream Vacation, Angeline, I’d Rather Have You, Centered, Catalina Sunrise, A Cowboy’s Heart, and Suck It Up to name a few) became staples of country music radio. Eighteen Sean Hogan music videos aired on Country Music Television. His first two U.S. album releases, 2003’s Ruled By Mercury and 2008’s Conspiracy Radio, climbed the Americana music charts and were well-received by radio south of the border. In between those releases, he recorded his fifth Canadian album, The Southern Sessions, putting him back on Canadian country radio with the hit singles What Would You Have Me Believe and Suck It Up. Even Linedancer Magazine (based in England) profiled Hogan with a great review and contributing choreographers writing dances to several Hogan tracks from the album. The 2009 U.S. release of The Southern Sessions produced two more chart hits there. In between he found the time to lead his annual cross-country Canadian Country Christmas tours, bringing a group of high-profile Canadian country music artists to large and small communities coast to coast raising over $100,000 for local charities and sponsoring dozens of children in Third World countries over the past decade.

The much celebrated multi-platinum, award winning artist catapulted onto the Canadian music scene in 1993 with the release of her debut album "Time For Mercy" featuring the hit single, I Would Die For You. A year later with “Living Under June”, she would have her career break out hit Insensitive that would solidify her position in the music world.
Arden has released 12 albums with 19 top ten singles. Her most recent recording, “Everything Almost” was released in 2014. With Grammy Award winning producer Bob Rock behind the console, the 11-track disc is considered to be amongst Jann’s finest work – progressive, yet retaining the magic that is distinctly Jann. In her career to date she has received 8 Juno Awards including Female Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year and in 1997 she hosted the Awards ceremony. Arden is also the recipient of 10 SOCAN Awards, 4 Western Canadian Music Awards, a Much Music Video Award, 3 Prairie Music Awards and an Alberta Recording Industry Association Award.
Jann is the proud recipient of a star on Canada's Walk of Fame; she has been inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, has been given the Vantage Women of Originality Award. In 2012 she was awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal and in 2013 was inducted into the Western Canadian Music Alliance Hall of Fame.
In addition to being a singer/songwriter, Arden is an author of note. She has written three books - If I Knew, Don't You Think I'd tell You and I'll Tell You One Damn Thing, That's All I Know and her best selling self-penned memoir, Falling Backwards. In past, Jann has also written a monthly advice column for Elle Canada – a feature that ran for a year. Arden is also a much in demand speaker, peppering her words of wisdom with her signature humour.
In 2010, Jann took on broadcast duties as the host of Being Jann an hour-long talk show on CBC Radio and in 2011 she sat in the judge’s chair for Canada Sings (Global TV). This year Jann has been a guest host on The Social, taking her seat at the table on the popular CTV daytime program. Arden has also narrated the popular program, ER Vets and she has produced two Documentaries – Free and Jann Takes Manhattan, both of which were met with favourable reviews.
Never one to settle into one discipline, Jann has made appearances in television sitcoms (Ellen - 1997, Corner Gas - 2005) and has made several guest appearances on the CBC’s Rick Mercer Report. In 2000, she took part in The Vagina Monologues when it toured Canada.
Arden's philanthropic work has included World Vision, she performed in Live 8 and MAC Cosmetics Fashion Cares AIDS benefit. In recent years Jann has also supported Gilda’s Club in Toronto.
Whether she is captivating audiences with her heartfelt music, entertaining them with her quick wit or sharing her written word in a boldly honest voice – Jann Arden is a Canadian original – a brilliant multi-dimensional talent.

Northern Saskatchewan’s In With The Old seamlessly combine raw talent and prairie comraderie with a passion and respect for the music from the past. Young and dedicated, they take a unique approach to memorable old-tyme music through gifted harmonies and infectious songwriting all told through a small town perspective.
Each member plays their own main instrument but often they will trade off and play each others’ instruments for a different dynamic. They are highly influenced by great traditional bluegrass and old-time artists like Bill Monroe and The Stanley Brothers, but also by many modern bands, ranging in style from rock to folk to indie pop. At their live show, expect fiery-hot banjo and mandolin licks, thoughtful songwriting, beautiful 3-part harmonies and one heck of a great time!

Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin

It’s a special treat when Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin, who normally tour separately and solo, get to share the stage together. If the chemistry seems especially sparkful, they come by it honestly, as they are a rare breed: a romantic partnership in real life, not just musical life. And the two together on stage makes for a classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
Danny Schmidt is best known for his riveting poetic lyrics, which have drawn favorable comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt for their depth and complexity. And gypsy spirit Carrie Elkin is best known for her incredibly soulful and dynamic vocals, which have drawn favorable comparisons to Patty Griffin at her most powerful, and Nanci Griffith at her most intimate.
Together, the respective strengths they each bring, individually, merge into a much greater whole . . . a performance of great energy and spirit . . . and one that audiences seem to be able to connect with on a multitude of levels, at once: Emotionally, Spiritually, and Intellectually.
Come celebrate the release of Danny & Carrie’s brand new album “For Keeps” where they will share songs back and forth, lending their voices to each other’s tunes, in harmony. And lending commentary to each other’s tunes, in the form of smart-ass between-song banter.

On Danny:
Named to the Chicago Tribune’s 50 Most Significant Songwriters in the Last 50 Years, Austin, TX-based singer/songwriter Danny Schmidt has been rapidly ascending from underground cult hero status to being broadly recognized as an artist of generational significance. Danny is considered a preeminent writer, an artist whose earthy poetry manages to somehow conjure magic from the mundane, leading Sing Out Magazine to tag him: “Perhaps the best new songwriter we’ve heard in the last 15 years.”On Carrie:
With her Red House Records Release, Call it my Garden, Carrie Elkin has emerged as one of the defining new voices in the world of Texas singer-songwriters, being celebrated by Texas Music Magazine as one of their artists of the year. The voice, the stories, the images, the grace, it’s the complete package. But it’s the power of her live performances that really have been creating an incredible buzz around this young artist. Maverick Magazine said it best, after a recent festival performance:”I have never seen a performer so in love with the act of singing. That’s the gospel truth. Onstage, Elkin was simply a force of nature.”Come celebrate the release of Danny & Carrie’s brand new album “For Keeps” where they will share songs back and forth, lending their voices to each other’s tunes, in harmony.
