JP Hoe

August 7, 2014

Cost: $15

“Western Canadian Music Award nominated artist JP Hoe is the ultimate singer-songwriter. The Winnipeg native is earnest, wry, ironic, funny and insightful. His material has a genuine homespun feel, filled with catchy hooks and melodies – genuine, uncontrived and confessional.”

Ottawa Life Magazine

JP Hoe’s sophomore album, 2012’s Mannequin, may be named for a plastic ideal — but it beats with a human pulse. The acclaimed Winnipeg-based singer/songwriter has crafted the kind of album that, to borrow a Wilco lyric, tries to break your heart. A soaring collection of cinematic epics that still burn with an intimate intensity. The six time Western Canadian Music Award nominated artist has a tremendous gift for writing songs would sound as good stripped down around a campfire as they would in a soft-seat theatre with a full orchestra.

Hoe’s big, bold, blue-sky voice — the product of hundreds of days on the road — has a lot to do with that. He’s a dyed-in-the-wool troubadour type who knows he’s only as good as his last show. He’s played gigs all over the world, connecting with audiences via his soul-on-sleeve lyrics, but also his down-to-earth unpretentious charm. There’s a reason his annual hometown concert, The JP Hoe Hoe Hoe Holiday Show, is a perennially sold out December tradition; the guy knows a thing or two about showmanship.

He also knows his way around a love song. It’s a deft songwriting touch that has evolved over two albums, including 2006’s Live Beta Project and 2008’s ambitious 17-song opus The Dear John Letters. Unlike that sprawling studio debut, Mannequin sees Hoe at his tightest and most focused; the writing is sharper. More world-weary, perhaps, but better for it. Mannequin is melancholy, but it never wallows. It’s an intimate album about getting a little older and a little wiser.

Emaline Delapaix is an Australian singer, composer and musician who lives between rural Western Canada and Germany with her big orange cat Reece. She spends a lot of time writing intense folk pop for piano, acoustic guitar and harp and sometimes whatever else she has lying about the place. Some say she sounds a little like Kate Bush or Tori Amos, but she also loves a lot of Scandinavian music: music that invokes the weather like storms and warm sunsets.

In Summer 2012 Emaline moved to Berlin performing over 150 shows all over Germany, Europe and Canada since making the vibrant city her home, creating a dedicated following. A long time coming, Emaline will be recording her first full length record between Berlin, London and Canada between Winter-Fall 2013/2014, experimenting with sounds and space, the weather and environment, this CD will be her most ambitious yet with an expected release date of Winter 2014 including European, North American and Australian tour dates.

Joey Stylez

August 21, 2014
8:30 PM
The Root: Community Emporium
Cost: $15
Contact:  306-825-5885

Originally making his mark as a hip-hop artist, Joey Stylez has opened his musical suitcase to try on a multitude of genres.

His latest album Feathery + Rosary is a collection of songs that reflect his growth as an artist and as an individual. It is an exploration of where Joey has been and where he is going. It is an embracing of his past and a sobering look at his future. It is dark and light. It is thoughtful and fun.

From the sure-to-be a dance floor hit “I Wanna Party With Hugh” to the more reflective “Bang, Bang” with a multitude of influences from The Doors to Spanish dub step, Joey is not afraid to take chances with his music.

Raised in the middle of the Canadian Prairies, this Cree musician has come a long way from the mean streets of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where a gang lifestyle was difficult to escape. But from those mean streets grew a determination within Joey to be more than what society saw. He believed in his own potential and has never limited himself by what others have tried to impose on him.

Now he brings that same drive to his career. It’s hard not to get caught up in the energy and excitement that is Joey Stylez! He commands a room without trying and one can’t help but be drawn to him. It is all part of the persona that is both rock star and schoolboy. And the duality is reflected in Feather + Rosary.

His latest effort is a continuation of his musical growth with the Juno nominated 2011 album Blackstar – an album named after his grandmother. Joey has been featured on Much Music and his songs have crossed over from Aboriginal music stations to mainstream radio. He has picked up numerous awards along the way from the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards to the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards.

Named on the Top 25 Canadian rappers by CBC Music, Joey mentors established and up-and-coming hip-hop acts through his label Stressed Street Entertainment. With over 10 million Youtube hits, Joey has also been recognized by other artists like The Weeknd, who has said he is inspired by Mr. Stylez.

Calum Graham

Cost: $10
Contact: 306-825-5885

Calum Graham signed to one of the biggest acoustic guitar labels worldwide – CandyRat Records in the summer of 2013. The first album Calum signed with them was a duet album with the legendary guitarist, Don Ross called “12:34”. A solo album “Phoenix Rising” was the follow-up record only 4 months later featuring Calum in a live – one guitar setting which has also been garnering rave reviews throughout the world.

Calum’s first foray into his own individual expression was not a result of his classically trained guitar work, it was teaching himself how to play finger-style guitar; a decision from which he never looked back.

Along with a select list of other musicians, Calum was invited to be a representative of Alberta music for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver as well as the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. In the summer of 2010, he won the first place title at the Canadian Guitar Festival – a feat that no other teenager has accomplished in the Festival’s history.

Since his move to Toronto, Calum has already been making a buzz on the music scene. Aside from performing at venues such as The Horseshoe Tavern, and The Rivoli, Calum has also performed between Colin James and K-Os with other headlines, Sloan, Serena Ryder and Ron Sexsmith playing at the 8th Annual Any Kim Christmas Concert at The Mod Club.

His second studio album, “Indivisibility”, features Calum on both lead vocals and guitar. The songs provide a combination of his exemplary guitar work and mellow vocals with a rhythmic undercurrent that bears testament to his impassioned playing, and punctuated throughout with elements of jazz, pop and acoustic blues.

Vic Juba Community Theatre   Dr. H. A. McDonald Season

The Canadian Brewhouse is the backdrop to a fundraising event that features the auctioning of one NHL team hat for each NHL team.

The holder of the hat of the Stanley Cup winning team receives 20% of the proceeds. The holders of the hats of each regular season Conference Winner receives 5% of the proceeds (each). The holder of the hat of the official last place team in the season receives 10% of the proceeds.

Get your team together to bid on the hat of your choice! Buy your tickets online here right now and then reserve a table for your group. To reserve a table, phone The Canadian Brewhouse: 780-871-0730.

The higher the bid, the more you ultimately win! For example, our total goal with this fundraiser is $21,000. After we divide up the proceeds at the end of Stanley Cup play-offs, that goal will allow our non-profit organization to potentially raise $12,600. Eastern Division Champ would then potentially win $1,050. Western Division Champ would potentially win $1,050. Last place would potentially win $2,100. The Stanley Cup Winner would potentially win $4,200. However, if we raise more, you win more!!

There will also be a silent auction which includes 4 tickets and flight to a Saskatchewan Roughriders Game (donated by Courtesy Air).
