Surreal Saskatchewan

Surreal Saskatchewan
from OSAC
May 1 - May 23
Lloydminster Cultural & Science Centre

Surreal Saskatchewan is a group exhibition that presents an alternative vision of life on the prairies. Unnerving and often unexpected this exhibition reflects the uneasy life of those who make their home in Saskatchewan. Monique Blom, Trea Jensen, Vlade Marasovic, Sharon Strand Sigfuson, Jean E. Sonmor, and Leesa Streifler have created paintings that transport the viewer into alternative dream-like worlds. Worlds where prehistoric skeletal step-bison roam the plains, menacing jesters torment, rainbow hills emerge from still waters, children and women transform into animals, and life cycles into death. Every picture tells a story and nothing is as it seems. Teeter-tottering between light and dark, joyful and despairing, Surreal Saskatchewan reflects the complexities of prairie life.

2014 Lloydminster Reads

Arts Without Borders Festival is excited to announce the 2014 Lloydminster Reads guest author is Cassie Stocks.

Stocks, winner of the 2013 Leacock Medal for Humour, will be reading exerts and discussing her debut novel “Dance, Gladys, Dance” on Monday, June 16 at Lakeland College’s Black Box Theatre.

“Dance, Gladys, Dance” is Stock’s first book and is only the sixth woman to win the Leacock Medal in its 67 year history.

27-year-old Frieda Zweig is at an impasse. Behind her is a string of failed relationships and half-forgotten ambitions of being a painter; in front of her lies the dreary task of find a real job and figuring out what “normal” people do with their lives. Then, a classified ad in the local paper introduces Frieda to Gladys, an elderly woman who long ago gave up her dreams of being a dancer.

The catch? Gladys is a ghost

In Dance, Gladys, Dance, Cassie Stocks tells the uplifting story of a woman whose uncanny connection with a kindred spirit causes her to see her life in a new way – as anything but ordinary.

Tickets are $23.00 and are available through the Vic Juba Community Theatre (780.872.7400). Lloydminster Reads will begin at 7:30 pm. Refreshments will be provided and book signings will be available at the end of the evening.

Singer-songwriter-pianist Jeffery Straker performs over 100 shows per year across Canada. He recently recorded for CBC radio’s ‘Canada Live’, and had a music video rise to the top 10 (#6) on Canada’s Much More Music. His album ‘Step Right Up’ was the #5 selling album in his home-land of Saskatchewan in August 2010, ahead of both Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. He’s sure neither of them cared. But he is sure that he, in fact, did. He launched a new album in 2011, ‘under the soles of my shoes’, and toured Canada in support of it with shows ranging from intimate house concerts to a sold-out orchestral debut with the full Regina Symphony Orchestra (Oct 2011). His songs have played on both CBC and commercial radio.

Be sure not to miss this delightful and enchanting musical for all ages. Linda Wolverton’s adaptation of this classic French fairy tale was adapted for the stage in 1994 by the musical and lyrical prowess of Alan Mencken,, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice. An ambitious, beautiful, and bookish heroine; a vain and devious suitor; a houseful of chanted items; a cursed and embittered monster; add to that a whirling ensemble of townspeople and you have all the ingredients that has made both the film and musical a modern classic.

Watch for more information about not just the production, but the amazing story behind it? Did you know, for example, that Belle’s original character was more like Cinderella, replete with two wicked sisters? It’s true! Watch for more interesting teasers in the weeks ahead. Seating for this performance is limited!

I’m a seventh generation Carolinian. My granddaddy’s granddaddy’s granddaddy was born in Caswell County in 1795. Maybe we go back further, I don’t know.

On Friday the 13th, November 1970, I was born at the Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina, probably the biggest military town in the country. Fort Bragg alone covers 250 square miles, and the used car dealerships and titty bars are like stars in the sky, grains of sand on the beach. The ground is sandy and the woods are open and piney, with tall loblollies, jack oaks, and the longleaf pine.

The Root: Community Emporium
Cost: $15

Good For Grapes
Good For Grapes formed in September of 2010, after a group of friends took a trip to Victoria, BC for some modest busking. Since the moment they stepped onto the ferry, they were an attraction. Drawing unexpected crowds, naturally this young and aspiring band took form; an original and talented five piece group, with an array of harmonizing voices and instruments. Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, this folk / alternative act has been gaining momentum ever since they stepped into the music scene. Their live stage performance in this time has evolved into an incredibly active, folk stomping, and inviting energy; always resulting in an extremely enthusiastic and involved audience. Beginning by supporting charities and foundations, their unique folk sound has been accepted into a large variety of venues. Through this, they have gained a loyal fan base which grows at every turn.

Zerbin
Formed in Edmonton in 2009, this all-Canadian band have wowed fans and industry alike with their infectious live performance and studio releases. They’ve shared stages with the likes of The Flaming Lips, FUN., Said The Whale and AWOLNATION, cementing their status as a band to watch.

Boasting a remarkable musical versatility, Zerbin has carved out anthemic tunes, and symphonic organic rock with multiple Top 40 releases on Modern Rock charts. Unwilling to settle for mere sing song memorability, Zerbin creates moments of sentiment and spirituality. It’s this musical prowess that landed them two 2012 Edmonton Music Awards for Music Video of the Year and Single of the Year.

Megan Nash and 2 Bears North - May 23

Megan Nash
“If a thunderstorm had a voice, it would sound like Megan Nash.” Craig Lederhouse, CBC Radio

Singer songwriter Megan Nash combines an honest insight into a young woman’s old soul with a powerful, moving voice. Raised in rural Saskatchewan, her lyrics carry a prairie imagery and her vocals have the character of a familiar gravel road.

Two Bears North
Sophie Heppell and Melissa Walker spent the last six years perfecting the formula that became the Edmonton based band Two Bears North.  Heppell's melodic sense, Walker's incomparable groove and the addition of Nich Davies on drums have made the band unstoppable. Winner of People's Choice at the 2014 Edmonton Music Awards, their nine song debut album Comeocean, released December 2013, received an additional five EMA nominations including Album of the Year and was named the top Edmonton album of 2013 by Gigcity.ca.

"Tight, punchy, pop-rock replete with melodic hooks, intricate rhythms, and some inexplicable/intangible quality that makes it all so utterly charming"

Head of the Heard, with The Balconies, and The Damn Truth - May 27

May 27, 2014 @ 8:30 PM
The Root: Community Emporium
Cost: $15
306-825-5885

Head of the Herd is modern blues with an edge. The Vancouver based band has recently completed their sophomore record and they’ve unmistakably found their stride. Harnessing the energy of their live show, this record highlights the beastly, melodic, storytelling prowess that is Head of the Herd. They created the album in two sessions. The first with one of rock’s most sought after producers Gggarth Richardson, the man behind Rage Against the Machine’s chart topping debut, Biffy Clyro’s 2013 UK #1 album “Opposites” and countless in between. The second session was produced by Rick Jackett & James Black from the multi-platinum group Finger Eleven. The album will be named after the first single, a duet with Jasmin Parkin from Mother Mother titled “By This Time Tomorrow.” The song has been used by the NHL & Hockey Night in Canada for a playoff montage, and as of late June hit #1 on the national rock charts.

The Balconies stand before you – teeth bared, eyelashes batting, clothing and hair drenched in sweat. In the blink of an eye, the group has grown from a humble indie pop band to a leather-clad three-headed rock and roll monster, punctuated by 80s hair metal flair.

The Damn Truth
Lee-La Baum – vocals, guitar
Tom Shemer – guitars
David Massé – bass
Dave Traina – drums

Lindsey Walker Band - May 30

May 30, 2014 - 8:30 PM
The Root: Community Emporium
Cost: $10
306-825-5885

Passionate, profound, at times hilarious, yet always touching, Lindsey Walker is a force to be reckoned with.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Lindsey moved out west to Edmonton on a dare over 6 years ago. Lindsey studied jazz performance at Grant MacEwan College, and always being seen as the “rock-and roll rebel” Lindsey never stuck to the norm. Upon graduating from Grant MacEwan, she started touring with Edmonton-based rock and roots bands. It wasn’t until 2011 she had begun perfecting her guitar skills and started playing shows solo. It proved to be the right choice for Lindsey, who played many local festivals, was asked to perform live on local radio and created a devoted mass of fans in less than one year.

In early 2012, Lindsey made a bold move to ask audience and friends for financial contributions to help fund her debut album. Within the 55 days she had allotted for the campaign, she was stunned see that her audience had helped raise more money than what she was asking for. In return they received completed copies of Our Glory, free tickets to shows and even homemade jam by Lindsey herself.

Lindsey officially released Our Glory May 4th 2013 to a packed house at The Artery in Edmonton, which was also the first night of her solo Our Glory tour which had stops in Kelowna, Jasper, Vancouver, Golden, and Winnipeg, among others.

Mario Lepage - May 31

May 31, 2014 - 8:30 PM
The Root: Community Emporium
Cost: $10
306-825-5885

Mario Lepage, otherwise known as “The Master of the Loops”, innovates and crafts a universe of his own, reaching the core of each and every listener down to their own separate individualism. The Fransaskois singer-songwriter has opened for some of Eastern Canada’s biggest francophone acts including Ariane Moffatt, Karkwa (Polaris prize winner), Radio Radio and Les Hay Babies. Lepage will be representing Western Canada at the Festival International de la chanson this fall – an annual international songwriting competition and festival held in Granby, Québec. Whether he performs as a solo act or with his psychedelic band, the multi-instrumentalist hones an energetic performance that blends catchy melodies, deep synths, dreamy lyricism as well as phat rhythm and bass.
